Now that our campaign for school board is over, thought Mother’s Day would be the perfect time to introduce the new Reaching the Stars education blog.
Marion C. Garretty’s quote describes the power of a mother very well. “Mother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.”
Yes…we CAN reach the stars. Happy Mother’s Day to all the women in our world reaching the stars and making a difference in our lives. And thank you, Anita Renfroe, for your great “Mom’s Song!” I love it!
A teacher gave her class of second graders a lesson on the magnet and what it does. The next day in a written test, she included this question: “My full name has six letters. The first one is M. I pick up things. What am I?” When the test papers were turned in, the teacher was astonished to find that almost 50% of the students answered the question with the word Mother. (Unknown)

Educational Responsibility Curriculum
It is time to give teachers more support by developing a comprehensive educational responsibility curriculum for grades 3 -12.
I love teachers and think they are the unsung heroes of our generation.
Today’s teachers have to compete with MTV, BET, iPods, iTunes, cell phones, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, text messaging, reduced school budgets, less parental involvement, the No Child Left Behind Act and a host of other concerns. They are educating our children. We should be helping them more.
How?
Last year our country spent over $550 billion on education. Almost all of it was spent on what adults will do to give students a good learning environment. Virtually nothing was spent on what children can do to positively impact their educational experience.
Breakdown:
Over 99% on learning environment issues – buildings, books, science labs, teachers, libraries, sports, etc.
Less than 1% was spent teaching students how they can help their teachers and take more responsibility for their education.
Think of possibilities if we doubled the student’s portion of the education budget and spent those monies on an educational responsibility curriculum for all students from 5th through 12th grades.
To be successful it is essential that the teachers, administrators, and the school board gets behind the concept, totally embraces it and positively reinforces the educational responsibility curriculum’s messages.
Some might say that with the NCLB and standardized tests requirements “we don’t have enough time.” My answer: Make time!
Of course it won’t be easy in the beginning, but think four years ahead when your 8th grade class has had four years of this curriculum. Do you think they will view school and their teachers differently? Will they be more prepared to learn? Will they have a better sense of the educational experience and the part they play in it?
I think they will, and I think that will have POWERFUL and positive implications for our educational system. Let’s help our teachers succeed.
